I headed out yesterday planning on my last multiday solo trip for awhile. Roy was to get here next Tuesday, and it would be nice to have someone else catching the fish.
I left the house about 3 am and left the harbor an hour later. I was fishing at 6 am. I caught a couple kings on the Loony spoon at the inside drag, then the NW wind came up, and it was getting a little uncomfortable fishing. I figured I’d move to the island drag, as my WINDY app shows that the island drag should be in the lee of the wind coming in there, and flat calm.
Well, that was wrong. And I seem to remember making this mistake last year when a NW wind showed up. I ran the hour up there and fished both of the drags there. I got a chicken halibut right off the bat on the Loony spoon, but nothing after that, and no whales there to indicate feed. The lump wasn’t comfortable, though.
I got a text from Sara – her hip surgery has been moved up a month! Finally! Her hip has really got her stoved-up, and this was great news. All she’s waiting on now is word that they can get the implant to Juneau in time for surgery next week. So, I cancelled Roy’s reservations and made plans to go to Juneau as soon as we know for sure. I went back to the inside drag for one last pass – nothing – and come back to town.
I took care of my fish and collapsed into my bunk. I slept hard after a good, long day. The builder has the forms in for the concrete pour. When I get back, there should be a foundation in.
